73.114 Small Angle Shades, a 30mm final instar larva on Sept. 25th 2017 found by Julian Birkhead on a Halifax Scientific Society ramble at Bradshaw. It was an unusual find as it's the only larva I've ever seen feeding on Himalayan Balsam!
73.114 Small Angle Shades pupa on Mar. 29th 2018, reared from larva pictured above. It's colouring up rapidly now having spent the winter in my garage in an airtight tuppaware tub. The tub was opened up every couple of weeks to let fresh air in. Immediately before snapping the lid back on I breathed on to the inside of it which added a little humidity to prevent the pupa from drying out.
73.114 Small Angle Shades reared from the pupa pictured above on Apr. 3rd 2018. It's five days later and the surprisingly beautiful adult has emerged.
73.118 Haworth's Minor to actinic light on Walsden moor on Aug. 1st 2023. Sundew Plume Moth was the target species but no luck so far - maybe next year.....
73.126/7 Saltern/Large Ear, a male to MV light at Eleonor's wood near Bride Stones moor on Aug. 12th 2024. I'm assuming this is a hybrid as the genitalia showed features of both species (see below).
73.134 Large Wainscot, one of two to actinic light at the lagoon at Cromwell Bottom on Oct. 8th 2023.
73.147 Small Dotted Buff male to MV light at Clock Face quarry, Krumlin on June 25th 2024.
A highly variable species which was identified with the aid of Charlie Fletcher.
An undoubted highlight of a rather modest catch.
73.156 Clouded-bordered Brindle, North Dean meadow, June 14th 05. Disturbed by day - a field observation. Although very common to MV light traps this was quite an exciting find back in the day.
73.158 Rustic Shoulder-knot to MV light at Turgate Delph, Norland on May 15th 2022.
73.160 Slender Brindle, North Dean meadow, July 21st 06. A daytime observation.
73.162 Dark Arches feeding on a sugar mixture in the garden at Skircoat Green on July 26th 2006.
Surely an overlooked species, the first Dusky Brocade I checked for this species turned out to be one!
A surprisingly well marked and beautiful specimen.
