73: NOCTUIDS: 114 - 168

73.114 Small Angle Shades, a 30mm final instar larva on Sept. 25th 2017 found by Julian Birkhead on a Halifax Scientific Society ramble at Bradshaw. It was an unusual find as it's the only larva I've ever seen feeding on Himalayan Balsam!

73.114 Small Angle Shades pupa on Mar. 29th 2018, reared from larva pictured above. It's colouring up rapidly now having spent the winter in my garage in an airtight tuppaware tub. The tub was opened up every couple of weeks to let fresh air in. Immediately before snapping the lid back on I breathed on to the inside of it which added a little humidity to prevent the pupa from drying out.

73.114 Small Angle Shades reared from the pupa pictured above on Apr. 3rd 2018. It's five days later and the surprisingly beautiful adult has emerged.

73.126/7 Saltern/Large Ear, a male to MV light at Eleonor's wood near Bride Stones moor on Aug. 12th 2024. I'm assuming this is a hybrid as the genitalia showed features of both species (see below).

A highly variable species which was identified with the aid of Charlie Fletcher.

73.155 Clouded Brindle to actinic light at Reedsmire Pond, Mirfield on July 11th 2024.
An undoubted highlight of a rather modest catch.

73.156 Clouded-bordered Brindle, North Dean meadow, June 14th 05. Disturbed by day - a field observation. Although very common to MV light traps this was quite an exciting find back in the day.

73.156 Clouded-bordered Brindle to MV light at Clock Face quarry, Krumlin on July 24th 2024.

73.165 The Confused to actinic light on moorland above Hollins Road, Walsden on July 18th 2024.
Surely an overlooked species, the first Dusky Brocade I checked for this species turned out to be one!

73.168 Double Lobed to MV light at Clock Face quarry, Krumlin on July 24th 2024.
A surprisingly well marked and beautiful specimen.

73.168 Double Lobed in the garden greenhouse at Skircoat Green on June 21st 06. It was found in a bag of ornamental grass clippings from the garden pond which the larva was probably feeding on.
